Driftpile Cree Nation Rapid Housing Initiative Project
Driftpile Cree Nation expressed a dire need for housing units that would provide immediate shelter and safety, encourage a path to wellness, allow for family and community support, foster a sense of independence for residents, including those with reduced mobility, and incorporate culturally relevant design features.
Our team collaborates with Driftpile Cree Nation and arrived at a design for a modular built complex containing 24 housing units. Prefabricated modular construction offers a sustainable and cost-effective solution for the challenges presented by a remote building site. The lower level includes fully accessible units for barrier-free living. Materials selected for the project represent elements of the surrounding natural area while providing for high energy efficiency and low future maintenance needs. Consideration of indigenous culture with regards to family and community togetherness was carefully considered, and indigenous art elements were incorporated into the design.
